The story follows Ruby, a desperate waitress trying to save her critically ill sister, Kimberley. Struggling to pay the hospital bills, Ruby accidentally bumps into the rude and wealthy Jaxon. After overhearing his need for a bride, she impulsively offers to marry him in exchange for money. They sign a 100-day contract, and Jaxon pays her a large sum.
Ruby uses the money to clear her sister's hospital bills, but her friend Ophelia becomes suspicious of her newfound wealth. Later, Jaxon orders Ruby to quit her job and prepares her for a masked party, warning her to avoid people and conversations. At the party, Ruby meets William Harper and Juniper "June," who seems overly interested in Jaxon. When Ruby's dress is ruined by Ophelia, who mistakes her for a thief, Jaxon rescues her and they leave the party.
